raised planter for my garden......!

This past weekend a friend and I went on a chicken coop tour sponsored by the  Slow Foods Group in the city of Orange. We visited 7 different homes, saw 7 completely different styles of chicken coops and several wonderful, urban gardens.

One garden in particular stuck out so much that I called Jim to come see it! There were so many ideas that I wanted to incorporate in our own little urban garden here in East Orange.

One thing that we both loved was the raised planter with lettuce growing right by her back door.  Fresh arugula and other salad mixes were not only beautiful to look at, but I can imagine delicious as well.  We both left with the determination that we would get this made!

so...fast-forward to Sunday afternoon...

A little angle iron from an old bed frame, a couple 2 X 6's, some hardware cloth and some leftover sun-shade, two bags of gravel and eight cubit feet of garden soil...voila! TF&G has a new raised bed just for lettuce, right in the shade of our beautiful Japanese Maple tree.  Seeds are being sown today, and many delicious salads are to come.
